- Words That Shook the World: 2nd National High School Public Speaking Competition, http://www.wordsthatshooktheworld.com/. Participants submit a three-minute speech titled, “My Message to America.” Students are also invited to participate in Words That Shook the World Public Speaking Summer Fantasy Camp and Competition Training Program, where students can deliver speeches via cell phones or video cameras and receive feedback. There is no cost to attend the camp or compete in the speaking competition. Here’s what you do: Go to the competition Web site and check out details on the competition and prizes. You can even view winning speeches from 2006. Sign up for Summer Fantasy Camp. Learn how to become a more compelling communicator and leader. There is no charge. Beginning August 24, 2007, submit your speech, record it and upload it to the competition Web site. Speeches will be judged online by thousands of high school principals and teachers. The ten best speakers will compete November 24, 2007 in Washington, D.C.
- The Congressional Award, http://www.congressionalaward.org/. The Congressional Award is the U.S. Congress’ award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary and non-competitive. The program is open to all 14- to 23-year-olds. Participants earn Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Certificates and Bronze, Silver and Gold Award medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas; Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. Earning the award is a fun and itneresting way to get more involved in something you already enjoy or something you’d like to try for the first time. This is not an award for past accomplishments. Instead, you are honored for achieving your own personal goals.
Scholarships
- Corine Jeannine Schillings Foundation, www.cjsfoundation.org. Scholarships to Study a Foreign Language are awared by the foundation to Girl Scout Silver and Gold Award recipients who plan to pursue, or are currently pursuing, a college major/minor in foreign language. Each recipient receives $1,500 and the scholarship may be renewed for a maximum of four years.
- The Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting, http://www.eocs.org/. Award: first place - $1,000, runner up - $500.
- American Legion Auxilary Girl Scout Achievement Award, www.legion-aux.org. Award: $1,000 scholarship and a trip to the ALA National Convention.
